Top 5 long-tail keyword generator tools 🧰
Building a new site?
Long-tail keywords are typically less competitive and therefore easier to rank for than short-tail keywords.
Here's how to find them using these tools 👇
1. Ahrefs’ Keywords Explorer (KE)
You won't be short of ideas with KE: Our database has billions of keywords.
Follow these steps to use it ⬇️
(Note: The Traffic Potential filter sifts out long-tail keywords where the current top-ranking page gets high search traffic.)
2. Ahrefs’ Site Explorer
Want to see the long-tail keywords your competitors rank for? Then try our competitive research tool.
Follow these steps:
2. Ahrefs’ Site Explorer (cont'd)
Something to note, however: There isn't a TP filter in Site Explorer yet.
To view your long-tail keywords' traffic potential, install Ahrefs' SEO Toolbar—then check the traffic to the top-ranking page in Google.
3. Google Keyword Planner
This free tool was made for advertisers, but can still be used to find long-tail keywords.
Simply click "discover new keywords", then:
i) Enter a broad topic as a seed keyword
ii) Sort the results by avg monthly searches in ascending order
⬇️
3. Google Keyword Planner (cont'd)
Keywords with a monthly search volume of between 10 and 100 are long-tails...
...but they may not be the best targets if they're just uncommon ways to search for popular topics.
To check if they're worth pursuing, try this:
4. Google autosuggest
Google autocomplete is a solid source of long-tail keyword ideas.
i) Search for a topic in Google
ii) Review autocomplete results; find long keyword(s)
iii) Check traffic to top-ranking page with Ahrefs' free traffic checker:
ahrefs.com
4. Google autosuggest (cont'd)
Again, the results for the top-ranking page will help to determine whether your long-tail keyword is worth trying to tank for.
If something gets a few hundred visits or less, it might just be worth pursuing. 🚀
5. Reddit
Here's a specific topic we came across in the SEO subreddit ⬇️
But when plugged into Ahrefs' traffic checker, we can see this long-tail gets thousands of monthly search visits.
This means it has high search volume—or is an uncommon way to search for a popular topic.
5. Reddit (cont'd)
So rather than pursue that long-tail, we can try something like this:
It gets a few hundred monthly search visits, meaning:
- It's a long-tail query
- It isn't an unpopular way of searching for a popular topic
Here's an example 👇
And there you have it.
Remember, not *every* long-tail keyword is easy to rank for—some simply aren't worth pursuing.
