Part 2 - #SSCMYTH
In part 1 we discussed the history of Cayn, how it was conquered by Isaaq, forcing the Dhulbahante to move to Buuhoodle, and how the fake Cayn region story was created.
In part 2 we will look at Sanaag, and how Dhulbahante is the smallest clan in the region.
FYI:
During the Protectorate era, the Sanaag region was known as Erigavo, named after its capital and largest city.
The three clans recorded as residents of Erigavo (Sanaag) were:
Habar Jeclo (Isaaq)
Habar Yoonis (Isaaq)
Warsangali (Darood)
Dhulbahante not included.
In the 1st SL Parliamentary elections of 1960, the 5 MPs elected from Erigavo were:
1. Sh. Ahmed Dalmar (Isaaq)
2. Mohamed Farah (Isaaq)
3. Michael Mariano (Isaaq)
4. Abdilahi Qablan (Warsangali)
5. Mohamud Ahmed Salah (Warsangali)
Dhulbahante did not win any seats. Zero.
To elaborate further on the results of the 1960 elections, here is how much vote each clan received:
Total Erigavo district: 9183 votes
Isaaq: 7040 (76.6%)
Warsangali: 1771 (19.2%)
Dhulbahante: 372 (4%) 🤡
Attached are the names and votes of each candidate.
So how can a clan that received ZERO representation in terms of MPs, and only 4% of the total vote, stake any claim to the region?
But wait, there is more...
The following year saw the highly divisive 1961 referendum on the Somali Republic's constitution.
Isaaq districts voted AGAINST the constitution whilst the Darod districts voted FOR it.
The results paint a clear picture of who the demographics of Sanaag...
Hargeisa (72% NO)
Berbera (69% NO)
Erigavo (69% NO)
Burao (66% NO)
Las Anod (82% YES)
Note the disparity between the Isaaq regions voting resoundingly against the constitution, while the Darod regions voting for it. Erigavo region (modern day Sanaag) is overwhelmingly Isaaq.
To elaborate on this further, and to specifically tackle the demographics of Ceerigaabo itself (not the whole district), the 1951 General Survey of Somaliland, did not list a single Dhulbahante subclan in Ceerigaabo. Only Isaaq subclans from HY and HJ.
Dhulbahante home wells in comparison.
Literally every single academic map of the Sanaag region clearly shows Ceerigaabo to be an Isaaq Habar Yoonis city.
This is not up for debate.
Ask yourself why we never see farastinis' alphabet flags anywhere near Ceerigaabo?
Just like Cayn turned out to be a myth concocted out of thin air, we can now see how the Dhulbahante claim to Sanaag is also false.
They're a minority in Sanaag, their largest village there is Fiqifuliye.
I suggest they adopt Beesha Bariga Sool (BBS) from now on 😁
