There is a lot of chatter about the bogus label of "SSC".
Sool and Sanaag are self-explanatory, but what is Cayn?
If you've ever wondered what Cayn actually is, continue reading, this will be the most comprehensive thread you will read on the history of the Ayn Valley. #SSCMYTH
We will discuss:
- What Cayn is, in terms of geographic territory, based on factual historical sources.
- How Dhulbahante lost Cayn (the story will surprise you, nothing to do with darwish wars as claimed).
- How a fake new Cayn was created 20 years ago, by Puntland.
1. What is Cayn?
Cayn is a shorthand reference to the Cayn Valley centred around the well of Caynabo.
According to Geology of British Somaliland, the Cayn Valley lies south of the Bur Dhaab range and encompasses:
Kiridh, Wadamagoo, Caynabo, Ceel Dhaab, Badweyn and Gawsaweyne.
When you plot the aforementioned towns of Cayn on a map, this is what you get, Cayn is quite clearly the area immediately surrounding Caynaba, the famous historical water well.
Historical maps of the region clearly show the Cayn Valley with Caynabo at the heart of it and surrounded by Kiridh, Wadamagoo, Badweyn and Ceel Dhaab as stated above.
Cayn is an Isaaq region, this is not up for debate.
Cayn region was settled by Dhulbahante. As recent as the 1950s Dhulbahante still lived in Caynabo and Ceel Dhaab. This was documented in the 1951 General Survey of Somaliland.
But the 40s and 50s were also the height of Isaaq expansion.. dangerous times for Darods...
There were frequent clashes in the area between the encroaching Isaaq and the local Dhulbahante. Here is an example from the 1950s in which Isaaq killed a Dhulbahante Khaalid and wounded 7 others during a fight in Ainabo.
This takes us to the next question...
2. How did Dhulbahante lose Cayn?
Many Dhulbahante claim to have lost Cayn & Caynabo in the 1920s after the fall of the dervish. This is a lie, used as an excuse to save face.
The Isaaq conquest of Caynabo happened in 1955, 5 years before independence.
The story is intriguing.
The conflict that led to Dhulbahante's loss of Cayn actually erupted up north in Sanaag!
The most famous Dhulbahante warrior Cali Guun (Naleye Ahmed) attempted to rustle camels from Boho Biciide east of Erigavo.
He ended up getting killed, and an all out war ensued...
Between Habar Jeclo and Dhulbahante.
The HJ war party pushed the defeated Dhulbahante all the way to the south of Las Canood. Isaaqs were fighting deep in Darod territory, close to the Somaliland Protectorate border!
A famous poem was recited upon this glorious victory.
The great Habar Yoonis poet Maxamed Aadan Caws (Yawle), upon hearing that Isaaq have finally conquered and driven the Dhulbahante out of the Cayn valley composed one of the most iconic poems in the region's history.
The act of displacing the Dhulbahante clan from its territory, forcing them to move en masse was so shocking, many academic texts discussed its dynamics and causes.
Here the author is examining how Reer Caymeed Dhulbahante were forced to become Reer Oodeed (people of the bush).
So now that we understand what Cayn is, and how the Dhulbahante lost it, naturally the next question is:
What is this new fake Cayn we hear about these days? And how did Buuhoodle became known as Cayn?
Read on..
The loss of Caynabo and the Cayn region was a colossal event in the psyche of Dhulbahante. It was their most prized watering point and a place where they lived for centuries.
The dhabayco of Puntland planned to exploit those feelings by the Dhulbahante...
In 2003, Puntland claimed Buuhoodle (a small district in Togdheer, no relation to Cayn up until this point) is now a new region created for Dhulbahante.
And in order to manipulate the Dhulbahante and reawaken their feelings of humiliation against the Isaaq, they named it Cayn.
Strange move no doubt, but somehow the Dhulbahante bought into it.
The Majeerteen wanted to ensure the Dhulbahante never forgot the humiliation of losing Cayn, so thats understandable.
Whats strange though is Dhulbahante accepting to toyed with like that by dhabayaco.
That was how the fake Cayn you sometimes hear about came to be. Its a made up concept created to stoke tribal tensions and remind Dhulbahante of past defeats.
The real Cayn according to all the sources, is Caynaba and its environs.
Lastly, here is the map we started the thread with. It clearly shows where Ain is (at Ainabo and near Kirit and El Dab) and where Buhotle is. They're two very different locations.
The internet has been the worst thing to happen to Darod propaganda.
