In the current environment more and more founders and start-up employees will move to larger / corporate jobs.
These employees have worn many hats, move fast and bring new energy and insights.
Focus on these 5 things to ensure you can recruit and retain these rockstars….
Velocity
Startups move fast.
Give them a problem to solve and clear the lane for them to solve it.
Larger orgs move slower….have more red tape.
Focus on projects and problems that need attention and get out of their way.
Autonomy
At smaller companies there is a flat org and people own larger swim lanes.
The worst thing you can do is put a startup founder / employee in a lot of check -ins.
Keep them out of meetings and watch what they come up with.
Impact
Startup founders / employees are in it to impact the world.
Make sure onboarding and convos always start with the WHY and emotional reasons for doing what they will be doing.
Ask them what lights them up and align their passion to their projects.
Connection to leadership
No matter your title or rank, startups require constant strategy overview and leadership face time.
At larger companies the leaders can make decisions behind closed doors.
Don’t forget to KUBA ⬇️ and give them 1:1 time with leaders to feel heard.
A note about KUBA
Freedom
Startups are a ton of work but founders are coming from an environment where they made every choice about
- their time
- their personal brand
- their networking
Personal brands are powerful assets. You don’t own the person. Learn to accept and harness their brand.
If you are a founder or startup employee - what would be the main thing you’d look for in a role at a larger company?
