Lewis was obviously tasked with an inverted role in possession last night.
Without the ball, when Mahrez dropped onto the centre back, Lewis was pushed onto Robertson in the press with Palmer on the other full back and City going man for man in midfield 1/
It’s really aggressive from City, you can our midfielders are comfortable being ahead of their man to facilitate a more aggressive press. Liverpool’s 8s are the closest player to City’s goal in this shot. Behind these the back 3 are man for man on Liverpool’s front 3
2/
The trigger for Lewis to press is when Mahrez tucks in and it starts to look like the ball will come back across the pitch towards the Liverpool left. He has to make sure the back 3 know he’s about to leave them 3 vs 3 and shift across
3/
Once he’s into the front line it makes it difficult for L’pool to play out with so many City bodies forward. Here Robertson can only give it away to Rodri on the edge of the box having been penned in by Lewis.
You can see Akanji pushed right up on Carvalho in the last shot 4/
If Liverpool shift the ball back towards their right side, Lewis’ role changes again. Either dropping into midfield to pick up the left 8, as he does with Thiago here, or going back into a full back role 5/
You have to be well drilled to play a role like that. For an 18yr old to play it brilliantly in a match of that intensity is pretty wild 6//
