7 reasons why cannabis is not the alcohol alternative everyone makes it out to be:
People make cannabis out to be harmless.
Is it worse than alcohol?
No.
Alcohol is one of the most harmful drugs.
And it's hiding in plain sight.
But there are some things people need to be careful with.
Here are 7 things to watch out for with cannabis consumption:
1) Schizophrenia
A 2020 systematic review found cannabis to be a major culprit in causing schizophrenia in at-risk people.
Cannabis can both trigger and worsen schizophrenic symptoms in those who are susceptible.
2) Toxic chemicals
Cannabis is still a newly-regulated industry.
There are few standards for the pesticides and preservatives companies can use.
Heating and inhaling toxic substances amplifies harmful effects.
Treat your body with respect.
Be mindful of what you consume.
3) Lower motivation
We all know the lazy stoner trope.
Cannabis is associated with lower motivation.
This amotivation is related to how THC consumption affects:
• Dopamine production
• Reward neurocircuitry
Taking a break now and then will help restore your motivation.
4) Increased anxiety
Some people use cannabis to lower anxiety.
But cannabis can increase anxiety at higher doses.
The anxiety is worsened by how cannabis can cause:
• Paranoia
• Rapid heart rate
• Chest tightness and pain
5) Reduced REM sleep
Cannabis reduces the time you spend in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.
This phase of sleep is associated with:
• Dreaming
• Processing emotions
• Cementing new memories
While cannabis may help you fall asleep, it will reduce your sleep quality.
6) Blunted testosterone
A 2022 study found THC reduces:
• Testicular volume
• Testosterone levels
• Follicle-stimulating hormone
Research shows that this effect seems to be temporary.
Chronic use should be carried out with awareness of this downside.
7) Psychological addictive-like behaviors
Heavy THC users often say the same thing:
"Weed isn't addictive! I can quit anytime I want."
But let's see what research has to say about this:
Cannabis meets the criteria for both the APA and the DSM-IV for substance dependence:
• It builds tolerance
• It causes withdrawal
• People give up other activities to use it
• People struggle to cut back despite wanting to
• People continue using it despite adverse effects
I am not trashing cannabis as a whole.
Please just be aware of the downsides.
Despite what many think, there is no free lunch.
If you consume it, do so with:
• Breaks in between uses
• Products with utmost purity
• Smaller doses than commonly marketed
And don't ever vape.
7 things to watch out for with cannabis consumption:
1) Schizophrenia
2) Toxic chemicals
3) Lower motivation
4) Increased anxiety
5) Reduced REM sleep
