If international football is ‘easier’ then every top club player should be better at this level especially if they play for a top nation but that’s far from the truth. Once again, the biggest defining factor is team dynamics and environment changing.

When Pogba played well for France, the narrative was that it’s easier to play for countries. Yet, so many other top club players didn’t perform as well from 2016-present despite it being supposedly easier. Now, the same, wrong narrative is being used against Maguire.
Go to City’s 100-point team and see how many of them played well for their countries straight after in the World Cup. If you’re good enough to get 100 points in the best league surely you can perform well at a much lower level being international football, right?
Name many of the best club performers right now and watch how they’re simply not as good for their countries. Why? It’s because they’re on a different team, things are suited to them, and their weaknesses aren’t being masked anymore.
I mean, look at Liverpool this season. Van Dijk’s been criticised for his defending by everyone yet he’s largely remained the same defender from years back. What’s changed? Him? No, the team. The team dynamics (specifically team defence) has become weak so he now looks worse.
Team dynamics/environment have always been *the* main key external factor that impacts performance. The sheer amount of examples, even within the last 4-5 years, are so numerous that a little reflection over them will make one realise just how nonsensical the common narrative is.
