If you're a student in a Tier-3 college, then open this.
My unfiltered advice:
1. It's a 100% myth that students from Tier-3 colleges cannot make big in life.
There're plenty of opportunities out there for you which are waiting for you if you've got the right capability.
The college name does not matter!
2. Having a vision, right from day one will always help.
Set your goals and start working on them because your college is not going to give you anything other than a degree.
3. Only focus on the main subjects and set a target to pass your B. Tech with above-average marks (>70%).
Why? Because most companies filter out candidates based on passing marks during hiring. 70% is the usual standard.
Spent the rest of your time and energy on your vision.
3. Don't avoid DSA in college.
It will build your logical reasoning, and analytical thinking and make you a better coder.
Spend as much as time on sites like leetcode, hackerrank, codechef, etc.
You need to be good at it.
4. Start contributing to the Open source, this will be the differentiator between you and the rest of the students.
You can earn money, work with world-class programmers, and gather some real quality work experience. This single step can be game-changing for you.
5. Build Portfolio
Add some real-world projects it could be as simple as adding a Library Management System to cloning your favourite site like Twitter.
Portfolio can be your proof of work and help you crack Technical interview rounds.
6. Networking.
Use Platforms Like Twitter/Linkedin and start networking with people who have already achieved what you wish to achieve.
Today lot of creators can be your virtual teacher.
Bonus tip: You can share your daily learnings and form an online community.
7. Go out and take part in events/hackathons.
Whether you lose it or win, you will meet new enthusiastic people and learn from them a lot.
This will give you the exposure and the confidence you need in life.
8. Communication Skill
If you're from a small town or village then english should not hinder your progress, so start working on it as early as possible.
You do need basic command of the English language as you'll be mostly working with foreign clients.
Note: These tips are highly effective for those who want to make a career in programming from a Tier-3 college in India.
That's a wrap!
