2. By the time of his death at the extremely young age of 27, Madhavrao had accomplished all that could’ve asked of him. He restored the Pad Padshahi to the heights of its old glory. He defeated the Nizam and humiliated Haider Ali, father of Tipu.
3. Peshwa Madhavrao made Mughal Emperor Shah Alam a vassal of the Marathas. He destroyed the roving bands of Afghan and Persian raiders who had plagued India since the death of Bajirao I, and financed the development of ports and cities.
4. Madhavrao had new infrastructure built all over India; even now the Holkar bridge near Pune - named after the Holkars who repaired it in the nineteenth century- stands testament to his administration’s success.
5. New ponds were excavated, new temples were raised, trade and security was re-established across Maratha domains. He lowered taxes and funded new businesses. He banned the forced leveeing of peasants as porters into armies, making a new more professional Maratha force.
6. From Attock to Cuttack to Thanjavur, he established rule of law and security of roads. He achieved all this before the age of 27 when he died of tuberculosis.
7. Madhavrao died of TB at the young age of 27. Imagine how little about this great ruler is discussed in academic circles, taught in textbooks, and shown in popular entertainment.
8. On the other hand, tyrannic despots such as Tipu, Nizam, British, Portuguese, and the Nawabs of Ganga valley are given disproportionate coverage and glorification. That’s what secular education has done to Indian history.
