At the age of 40 and after a break of 6 years, how difficult is it to make a comeback in a career?
If I could do it, so can you. 10 key lessons that helped me. ↓
➊ Find a career option
⬘ If you had prior work experience, you probably know it. But for others, it's really a tough call to make.
⬙ You can discuss it with someone experienced. Discuss with at least 2 and at most 5 people. See where you will be the best fit.
➋ Check your role and level
⬘ Your role could be a developer, designer, tester, performance engineer, DevOps, etc. While deciding on a career option, finalize it.
⬙ Your level could be Junior, Senior, etc. Decide it based on your prior experience.
➌ Prepare a roadmap and, work on your goals
⬘ Now is the time to prepare a roadmap. Again, if you have no prior experience, talk to some seniors.
⬗ Always lay out a very simple roadmap at the initial stage.
⬙ Check what all you need to cover. Time-bound all your goals.
➍ One goal at a time
⬘ It's easy to get carried away and rush for things.
⬙ Always keep it simple. Stay calm and try to achieve one goal at a time.
➎ Know how to prepare
⬘ In this digital age, you'll get all study materials online. It's a boon and bane as well.
⬗ Always maintain a good ratio between watching videos, reading articles/books, and practicing.
⬙ This way you can avoid tutorial hell.
➏ Reach out to people
⬘ You may be an introvert. But there is no other choice than to open up.
⬗ Reach out to many people. At least 1 out of 4 people respond and help out.
⬙ Join seminars, webinars, meetups, etc. Try to learn while socializing.
➐ Taste of a failure
⬘ I love failures. Because it makes me learn so much. Without getting frustrated, find out what actually didn't work for you.
⬙ To lower your bad mood, befriend some like-minded people. Talk to them.
➑ Don't quit early
⬘ Don't lose hope just seeing another person succeed with a different career option.
⬗ Give yourself at least 6 months of time before quitting and jumping to something else.
⬙ It's very important to not fall for FOMO.
➒ Build connections
⬘ Social media, friend circle, college alumni, distant relatives, etc.
⬗ Join friendly discord channels, social media groups etc.
⬙ Connections will help you in getting opportunities.
➓ Getting opportunities
⬘ I suggest people do some freelancing, part-time job. After a break, it's tough to convince employers for a full-time.
⬙ Do some real work that strengthens your portfolio. All these things will help you with a full-time opportunity.
My Story: Flashback 2016
⬘ I was an Applications Architect. I had 10 years of experience in multiple domains.
⬙ I quit my job due to health issues and it was never easy to come back since then.
My Story: Fast Forward 2021
⬘ After several failures, I finally decided to be a Tech Educator and mentor. Then joined Twitter.
⬙ I built my expertise in writing threads. I started sharing tutorials, cheat sheets, road maps, practice questions, interview questions, etc.
My Story: Today in 2022
⬘ I am getting multiple writing opportunities on different platforms for which I am getting paid.
⬙ I am soon going to start venturing into making video resources.
