FACTS ABOUT J&K’s ACCESSION TO INDIA
The history of J&K’s “Accession to India” is a classic case of this myth-making. A lot of haze surrounds the historic accession of the princely state that took place on Oct 26, 1947. That allows for leaders in J&K to repeat the myth
1/19
of “conditional accession”.
INSTRUMENT OF ACCESSION
The final chapter in India’s Independence saga was the challenge of the accession of the 565 princely states into one of the two dominions by August 15, 1947. A single document called the “Instrument of Accession” was
2/19
to be the basis for the accession. It was the same accession document that the Maharaja of J&K signed too.
26th OCT ACCESSION DAY
The day marks the anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh signing the ‘Instrument of Accession’ with the Government of India. The signing of this
3/19
document cemented J&K as a member of the Dominion of India.
PAKISTAN VIOLATED STANDSTILL AGGREEMENT TO ANNEX J&K FORCEFULLY
Soon after the partition, the Pakistani leadership, both civilian and military, was desperate and determined to expand its territorial area. Hari
4/19
Singh had signed a Standstill agreement with Pakistan but Pakistan violated the agreement by attacking J&K with intent to annex the state forcefully.
PAKISTAN INVADED J&K
Pakistan invaded J&K on Oct 22, 1947, and brought in its wake horrifying mass plunder and vandalism.
5/19
Thousands of men, women and children were mercilessly slaughtered by the intruders. Four days later, on October 26, 1947, Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession, merging his state with India. Following the accession, Indian troops arrived in Srinagar to repel

the tribal invasion.
OPERATION GULMARG
Soon after its independence, the Pakistani Army prepared a plan called “Operation Gulmarg” and put it into action. According to the plan, an irregular militia consisting of volunteers from Pakistan Army and Pashtun Tribals were armed
7/19
at the brigade headquarters at Bannu, Wanna, Peshawar, Kohat, Thall and Nowshera by the first week of September. The armed militias were expected to reach their launching point in Abbottabad on Oct 18, and subsequently cross into J&K on Oct 22, 1947. The primary
8/19
objective of the Operation was to capture “Srinagar” by October 26.
DESTRUCTION, KILLING, RAPE AND LOOT
The invading Pakistani militia had no regard for anyone. They ran riot, leaving chaos, destruction and killings in their wake. They even raped nuns, who were performing
9/19
their duties at St. Joseph Hospital & schools in Baramulla. Even doctors, paramedics, and nurses tending to the sick and incapacitated were not spared by the invading militia of Pakistan.
INDIAN ARMY SAVED KASHMIR FROM PAKISTANI RAIDERS
Subsequently on Oct 27th 1947, the
10/19
Indian Armed forces were airlifted to the Kashmir Valley. The Army launched an aggressive offence against the rampaging Pakistani raiders and stopped their march towards Srinagar. In the subsequent months, the Indian Army purged the state of the Pakistani raiders and forced
11/19
them to retreat to what is present-day Pakistan Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
FAKE NARRATIVE OF PAKISTAN
Pakistan has managed to spin a narrative that concealed its role in the 1947 invasion calling it a 'spontaneous' attack by the tribal’s in response to the communal
12/19
killings in J&K. In addition, it has sought to throw doubts about the genuineness of the accession of J&K to India, labeling the entry of Indian troops on October 27, 1947 in Kashmir as illegal. Pakistan has observed this day as a 'Black Day' for decades in Pakistan, in
13/19
Pakistan occupied J&K (POJK) and in the Diaspora in order to bolster its narrative.
DOCUMENTARY EVIDENCE
However, there is documentary evidence in terms of eyewitness accounts of the tribal invasion that demolishes its case. One such is of Akbar Khan (later a Maj. General
14/19
and involved in the Rawalpindi Conspiracy Case) whose book 'Raiders in Kashmir' leaves no doubt about how Pakistan planned the invasion and was directly involved in it.
TERRORISM- STATE POLICY OF PAKISTAN
Pakistan has made numerous attempts to annex the J&K.
15/19
From Operation Gibraltar during the 1965 Indo-Pak war to the 1988 Operation Topac, which hinged upon cross-border terrorism and saw the emergence of a deadly insurgency in Kashmir were part of the same doctrine which was initiated on October 22, 1947. Pakistan’s obsession
16/19
with annexing region doesn’t seem to die down. With terrorism a part of its state policy, Pakistan is unlikely to give up on this obsession. It will keep on making such futile attempts to make its delirious unfulfilled dream come true.
17/19
PROPAGANDA
From past seven decades Pakistan has been spreading false propaganda in the name of Kashmir solely with intent to keep its cross border terrorism and proxy war alive in J&K.
18/19
In line with its malafide intent to disrupt peace in Jammu and Kashmir this year as usual its propaganda machinery is at its full swing to spread false propaganda and manufacture fake narrative.
