Amy was late for her personal training session.
She was a Mom and stressed-out lawyer.
With one look, I knew she was having a bad day.
I put down my clipboard and decided to try something new.
After, she broke down in tears . . .
"Let's play in the park today." I said.
"Uhh, sure." Amy replied.
I grabbed a medicine ball and we set off . . .
As a trainer I'm not supposed to admit this, but I made up her workout on the fly.
We ran up the hill, dropped, rolled, and did push-ups.
Then I gave her the med ball and the fun started :)
When life feels out of control, sometimes you just need to smash shit.
Smashing: adj; the act of propelling an object as hard and as fast as possible with the goal of making a loud noise.
We fucking smashed that med ball.
Our clients are humans with real lives.
And those lives can be tough.
Great trainers know to read the client in front of them that day, and veer away from the plan if necessary.
Exhausted, Amy lay down.
She had tears in her eyes.
"This is the first time in 12 years I've laid in the grass." She said.
The next day, Amy brought me muffins.
"Do you bake often?" I asked.
She smiled and said, "this is my first time."
They were lemon sesame.
