A thread 🧵:-
⭐ What is Khalistan Movement?
Khalistan movement is a separatist movement seeking to create a homeland for Sikhs by establishing a sovereign state called Khalistan(Land of the Khalsa),in the Punjab region. The proposed state would consist land from Punjab,India & Punjab,Pakistan
⭐ History of Khalistan Movement:-
👉 In 1940s, when Lahore Resolution of the Muslim League demanded Punjab be made into a Muslim state,a section of Sikh leaders, led by Akalis, grew concerned. They put forward idea of Khalistan as theocratic state covering greater Punjab region.
👉In 1947 independence of India, Punjabi Suba movement, by Akali Dal, sought the creation of a province named Khalistan.
👉But States Reorganization Commission rejected Akali Dal’s demand, fearing that it would effectively mean creating another state based on religious grounds.
👉In 1982, the Akali Dal and Bhindranwale joined hands to launch the Dharam Yudh Morcha.
👉In 1982, Akalis announced that they would disrupt the 9th annual Asian Games to be held in Delhi. While it had limited success, it helped many Sikhs sympathize with the Akali Morcha.
👉Bhindranwale emerged as extremist voice of Sikhs, over-ruling the moderate voices of leaders declared himself as the protector and arbiter of Sikh rights.
👉Widespread murders by followers of Bhindranwale occurred in 1980s' Punjab, particularly against Hindus and Nirankaris.
👉In 1983, Bhindranwale and his followers took up residence inside the Harmandir Sahib complex (aka the Golden Temple) in Amritsar. He converted the holy shrine into an armed fortress from where he ran a virtual parallel government.
⭐How Khalistani gets Funding:-
👉Khalistan groups receives funding, support, and military training from Pakistan.
👉Pakistan supports Khalistani groups by drug trafficking and cross-border money laundering.
👉Operatives based in the UK, Germany and North America, who are members of the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) and its front organisations, are transferring huge amounts of monetary resources to BKI sleeper cells in Punjab and other places.
👉The funds are distributed through intermediaries who then send it to the group's sleeper cells in Punjab, and other places, jailed militants and families of militants.
👉Huge funds are being collected abroad for on-ground campaign and propaganda against government of India.
⭐Reality behind Khalistan movement:-
👉 Pakistan is using Khalistan project as a strategic buffer and how independent Khalistan would pay way for Kashmir which has been Pakistan’s interest since 1947.
👉Pakistan is the main force nurturing the drive to create a ‘so-called Khalistan’ or independent homeland for Sikhs and the extremists backed by Islamabad pose serious threats to India and Canada. Reported by a Canadian think tank.
👉What Khalistan is supposed to be? Khalistanis themselves don’t describe it precisely because, other than the revenge for blood extracted from Sikhs in 1984 after assassination of Indira Gandhi, there’s really no description anywhere of what kind of state would Khalistan be.
👉A map that has been published to illustrate where Khalistan will be, and it is very revealing. It makes very grand claims on Indian territory, to the east of the Radcliffe line, but makes no claims on Pakistani Punjab. How do you explain that?
👉Half of traditional Sikh lands that are now in Pakistan are somehow left off the map. Lahore was the capital of a Sikh Empire 200 years ago. We can’t say that’s irrelevant to Sikh culture and history.
👉What about Nankana Sahib? It is the birth place of Guru Nanak, the founder of their religion. They are not claiming that. These have been left off for strategic reasons to maintain Pakistani support.
👉Perhaps the original plan was to reclaim the Sikh empire. But the Sikh empire reached all the way to the Khyber Pass in the west and to western Tibet in the east, down to the Sutlej river.
👉The empire was dominated by its capital at Lahore, which was Ranjit Singh’s seat of power and his home base. So clearly, the map of the Sikh empire does not match with the various versions of Khalistan being proposed by the separatist leaders.
👉They also do not define what is the character of the proposed state of Khalistan. Is it a democracy? Is it a westward leaning free market economy? Is it a theocracy? What about religious minorities in Khalistan? Are Hindus supposed to flee again like they did during Partition?
👉There’s only Pakistan which has supported the movement since the very start. It is the need for revenge in Pakistani eyes for the 1971 War, which tore off what was then East Pakistan to turn it into Bangladesh, an independent country.
👉Zulifikar Ali Bhutto, then leader of Pakistan, said that we need to get revenge, we need to tear off a piece of India in retaliation and that would be Khalistan. That would provide a buffer state between Pakistan & India & it would cut off Indian land access to Kashmir....
....which is another important priority for the Pakistani leadership. So they had their reasons for supporting Khalistan. The Khalistan movement has gotten nowhere despite Pakistani support, but it certainly had no prospects without it.
👉All major parties relied on the religious sentiments of people for their political gains. Efforts like the Anandpur sahib resolution fueled regionalism and communalism.
👉People of Punjab try to Understand the real propaganda behind this so called Khalistan Movement.
👉This is nothing more than a geopolitical game of Pakistan.
👉Some leaders of Punjab supports this movement to gain religious sentiments of people for their political interest.
👉At the end the people of Punjab would suffer because of this so called movement.
