I crossed 400 published stories on Medium this week.
I've been making $$$$/month for 17 months.
Here are my 6 tips for Medium:
1. The basics
Your article needs a:
• heading
• subheading
But you have to be better than the basics. Read on...
Now, high-performing articles also have
• clear subheadings in the body
• concise intro and conclusion
• no unnecessary bold/italics
• enough white spaces
• simple sentences
• 4-6 minute long
• easy words
Follow this and you'll be okay.
2. Attract freelance clients
When you attract clients instead of chasing them, you
• can negotiate a better pay
• have an upper hand
Medium is great for that. Here's why...
You write about what you want.
Earn from the platform.
Build your portfolio.
The 🍒 on top is that visibility helps you get more work, and more $.
➡️ To do
Use Medium as your portfolio.
Submit to pubs so you can get rejected and become a better writer.
3. Quantity leads to quality
I only got good traction when I hit 20 articles a month.
Now, I aim to publish 17-20 articles.
➡️ To do
Start with 1 article/week, and gradually increase it.
Aim to publish at least 15 articles each month.
4. Writing for money
You'll have to write 15-20x a month.
It won't happen if it's just for the money. You have to genuinely be in love with writing.
➡️ To do
Think of why you're writing here instead of jumping on the bandwagon to write.
5. Don't do this
Don't chase a viral article or replicate viral articles.
Your readers will notice the desperation.
Also, you'll be disappointed if this doesn't work.
➡️ To do
Focus on becoming a better writer instead of a viral writer.
You'll reach more people when you get better at the craft.
6. First 50 articles rule
Tbh your first 100 articles will be a journey.
But the first 50 will be sub-average. And that's good, that's how you learn.
Give yourself 50 articles to see minimal traction.
➡️ To do
Be patient and put in the reps.
Medium is a one-year-long game.
Learn from other articles and it's pretty 'figureoutable'.
Summary
1. Familiarise yourself with what works
2. Build a portfolio to attract clients
3. Quantity leads to quality
4. Don't write for only the money
5. Stop trying to chase a viral article
6. Put in the reps, be patient, enjoy the journey
