Thickness of Shimstock foil is around 8-12 microns. Articulating paper thickness ranges from 20-200 microns. Always use both articulating paper and Shimstock foil for occlusal adjustment and analysis.
Steps:
1- Check the occlusal contact beforehand with Shimstock foil.
2- Record the teeth with Shimstock hold in MIP at three areas in the arch right, left and anterior.
3- Following delivery of the restoration repeat step 2 again and check the Shimstock hold on the same teeth.
4- If there is no hold or light hold on the teeth use a thin articulating paper with a thickness no more than 40 microns and assist the patient into MIP. Let the patient sit upright and be sure the teeth are dry for best results.
5- Check the marks on the restoration and adjust accordingly. Continue the adjustment until you have Shimstock hold on all previous teeth.
6- Be sure to check excursive movements with a different articulating paper color to remove unwanted interference.
Tips:
Never use articulating paper thicker than 40 microns on natural teeth or direct and indirect restorations to avoid unnecessary grinding. Thick articulating paper 40-100 microns should be used on removable prosthesis teeth only.
Articulating paper thicker than 100 microns has limited clinical use. It’s mostly used in the two phase articulating paper technique with glazed and polished restorations that are difficult to mark.
The thick paper is used first to produce a sticky large surface mark on the teeth. The second thin articulating paper with a different color will produce a small mark on the larger mark.
Never adjust the teeth until it is out of occlusion. The tooth may over erupt and you will end up with an unplanned occlusal contact or interference.
