In last 2 years, I've screened over hundreds of Resume as an Interviewer
Here are the 5 common mistakes I've seen people making
🧵👇
1. Having Multi Page Resume.
- Reword long sentences.
- Break para into bullets.
- Include relevant projects and achievements(not all).
- Creating a one-page resume is a skill, it makes the interviewer feel that you respect their time & you've done your homework well.
2. Having a Generic Summary
- For eg this:
"I want to pursue a career in the software industry and want to become a valuable asset...blah blah blah"
- Every other candidate who has applied for that job will write this, how r u diff from them?
Instead of a Summary, focus more on your projects, and achievements which best describe your journey & relevant to the job description.
Remember, you've got limited words and you got to best showcase your skills, and achievements and try to be different from the rest.
3. Not Having Proof of Work
- Add those projects to Github which solve some real problems & best describes your potential to the interviewer
- Add proper documentation to all your Github projects which helps describe your project in the best possible way
- For non-programmers, you can choose any other site which best describes your work for eg. behance for UI/UX Designers
4. Having CV in Wrong Format
- Always remember when you upload your CV on any Job portal then the bot is the very first to read it and extract details from it
- Then after humans read it, hence it's advisable to avoid any fancy design and formatting unless you're designer
- Always try to keep your CV in common formats like doc, docx, pdf.
- Avoid giving any uncommon formats like JPEG, or any image format. Images are comparatively difficult to extract for bots hence avoid them.
- Remember, if you know that there's no bot on the other side then you can play around with your creativity, and make a CV in any format you like, that's completely ok.
- In fact, in such a case I would encourage you to do so to stand out from the crowd.
5. Not Having Photo
- This is controversial some might agree and some might not.
- But as a recruiter, I love to see a photo on a resume because that feels more human.
- I know in coding, looks don't matter, but it does make you look confident in front of a recruiter.
- The photo should be a professional headshot with your killer smile.
- Avoid pasting your passport-size photo that's boring.
6. Not Having Links
- Add links that best represent your potential and skills - it could be your Linkedin, Hosted project, Personal blog, Github links
- It could also be Twitter (or any other social media) link if you're sharing helpful content related to programming there
- This helps the interviewer/recruiter know more about you and your work
- On one page, it's not possible to add every detail but in your links, you can mention every detail which you want to share with a recruiter
That's it for now!
Do you know?
