1. Mikhail Gorbachev died August 30. Nobody noticed. Russia didn't care. He brought down the world's strongest military power and 2nd largest economy with his stupidity and naive belief that the West would love Russia. But what he did was good for India. Here's why.
2. With the Soviet Union gone, India was left friendless. The Indian economy which depended on exporting shoddy goods to Russia now had no market. Just a year after Russia's collapse, India was forced to open up its market. Today India is the world's 3rd largest economy (PPP).
3. Besotted with the West, Russian Foreign Minister Andrei Kozyrev (a stooge of the highest order) refused to meet Indian Foreign Secretary JN Dixit and sent word via an aide that henceforth Russia would treat India and Pakistan as equals. India was no longer a special friend.
4. Dixit communicated this diplomatic snub by the Russians to Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao who promptly decided to mend relations with the US, which had been treated like an enemy by the Congress and its Left allies for over 50 years.
5. The improvement in relations with the West led to a flood of new technology, investments and American military equipment. Army soldiers told me back in the 1990s their new American communication equipment was so much more easier to use and maintain than the Soviet era gear.
6. Another key spinoff was communism was wiped off the map of Europe. Former communist countries became prosperous and modern. Indian socialists who admired the USSR and hoped to establish a communist dictatorship in India got a stinging slap in their ugly faces. Ultimate!
