⚪️🔴 Arsenal vs Fulham : Tactical focus
🇳🇴 Martin Ødegaard : build-up phase, pressing, role and positioning in penalty box
🧵
When Arsenal implemented its high pressing, Odegaard had a clear mission : manmark Palhinha, constraining central defenders to play long balls. Palhinha’s huge pass volume is key for Fulham in low build-up phase, it was important to lock the area.
ODEGAARD’S PARTICIPATION IN COUNTER PRESSING
Arteta frequently insists on the way his team counter-press and how fundamental it is to maintain pressure in defensive third.
Closing pass options force ball carrier to think, Odegaard press at this precise time to recover the ball.
Arsenal central defenders were involved in that counter press, the idea was to recover the ball quickly, so Odegaard can target Martinelli or Saka, wide wingers in that kind of situation.
ODEGAARD’s MOVES IN LOW BUILD-UP PHASE
Fulham’s 4-4-2 out of possession was settled in Arsenal’s def third, and it worked well, because Xhaka-Eleneny had difficulties to end up in a good position to receive.
That’s why Martin’s moves were the key to overthrow that structure
In first phase of build-up, and to get Xhaka away from that 4-4-2, Arteta frequently utilized Tierney as an inverted fullback to reinforce midfield structure, accompanied with Odegaard runs into the structure to receive and catalyze build-up.
Odegaard kept that central position, given risky vertical passes attempted by central defenders in build-up. When he receives the ball, Odegaard’s one touch passes to White have been very precious to create space and progression in build-up.
Odegaard’s best asset is to develop pass automatisms with players (Gabriel, Saka).
Given Gabriel’s passing skills, Odegaard can also start his runs from inside the structure to attack spaces and receive long balls.
Odegaard’s ability to move efficiently into structures is interesting because even he doesn’t receive the ball (📸), his role is to stay ready to receive vertical passes.
In the second phase of build-up, when White is in possession, Kebano jumps to him, creating a pass option for Odegaard (thanks to Saka’s positioning).
After counter pressing, as I said, first objective was to target Odegaard. Then, Artata could rely on two things: excellent timing in Jesus runs, and Odegaard passes, able to find incredible passing angles.
ODEGAARD ACTIVITY ON THE RIGHT LANE
We know Odegaard tends to move on the right lane in possession. When the ball gets into opponent’s final third, Odegaard dives into zone 14.
Why doing such moves ? First of all, to end up in an ideal position to shoot, then force Robinson to make a choice between man marking Odegaard or Saka, ready to dive on the second post
This situation sums up quite well all Odegaard qualities mentioned above:
-one touch passing quality, Jesus ball retention, close distances with Saka
- dive into zone 14, excellent positioning from central defenders
Saka-Odegaard automatisms in possession near penalty box are getting more and more fluid and spontaneous : short passing schemes, invert positions, overthrow zonal marking.
Odegaard knows when to attack halfspaces. Saliba tends to carry the ball, especially when there is enough space. Saka and Odegaard jumped into the halfspace to score.
To dismantle manmarking, Odegaard also did the opposite move : from zone 14 to the right lane. Each time Odegaard got enough time to choose between those 2 zones (red circles), he became a real danger given his pass quality.
