While i was studying somali history I came across some portuguese & dutch & arab historical documents on somali merchants in the indian subcontinent & indonesia & china.
Its quite interesting 🧐

What i immediately noticed is that al the local traders & authorities in asia preferred trading with the somali or arab merchants rather than with the europeans. more interestingly is the fact that somali merchants almost always had good relations with the local authorities

In india they would study with the highest scholars and get leading roles in their society in mecca & medina and baghdad they would study with & establish good relations with the local rulers šŸ‘‡

In the maledives they even became governors and were even able to arrange a direct meeting with the queen of the maledives for the 13th century traveler & scholar ibn battuta šŸ‘‡ this shows how well established & connected they were in that region.

In china they would study with muslims and would even send multiple ambassadors to china & had direct links to the emperor of china. Its also known through ibn battuta that the 14th century scholar sa’id of Mogadishu had written a book on china. Again showing good relations

In sofala šŸ‡²šŸ‡æ somali merchants from mogadishu had good relations with the local authorities who had plenty of gold wich led to somalis dominating the gold trade in east africa. This was not exploitation but trade based on mutual respect unknown to europeans at that time.

Literally everywhere somali merchants & portuguese merchants were present in asia all the local traders & authorities would prefer to trade with the somalis/arabs wich led to the portuguese using force & bombardements to force the locals to trade with the portuguese.

The reason the portuguese 11 times attacked but failed to conquer mogadishu was b/c of this trade dispute ! It wasn’t about them being europeans and just wanna conquer savages, thats what they want you to believeā€¼ļøthey were economically being outplayed and were mad about it

When the portuguese arrived on the somali coast its clear to historian that the somalis were not impressed by them ā€¼ļø somalis saw them as barbaric thugs and defeated them in the south and in the north in major battles effectively blocking portuguese entry into the horn.

My question is how were a couple 100 thousand somalis in the middle ages able to resist any foreign incursion in their lands and establish good relations with all of asia becoming a famous and wealthy trade destination but 30 million somalis cant keep sahan research out?šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø
