🔴⚪️ Arsenal pressing structure analysis in first half : how did Arsenal annihilate Crystal Palace’s build-up ?
Arsenal applied many pressing shapes according to ball location.
In mid third, Arsenal implemented a 1-3 structure, Odegaard constantly manmarking Doucour, key player for Crystal Palace’s vertical build-up.
In that same zone, one of the two players in midfield (Xhaka or Partey) tended to jump out, in order to trap ball carrier and reduce his pass options.
In mid third, Gabriel Jesus and Martinelli frequently switched positions. Jesus’ anticipation to cut passing angles has been useful to recover the ball. Arsenal constrained Palace to build-up on lanes (midfield structure being trapped).
Pressing structure near penalty box
Arsenal modified its structure to set a triangle, Martinelli cutting inside to prevent Palace being in numerical superiority.
That move could have been possible because of that « back-up » position from Zinchenko, ready to press Clyne
Because Crystal Palace could not take advantage with vertical build-up, Guaita frequently kicked the ball out (long balls).
As I said, Arsenal switched in 4-1-4-1 in that zone, thanks to Partey’s involvement in pressing phase. That pink zone was the target to recover the ball, and switch to the opposite.
What I appreciated the most, no matter the players, pressing structure’s objectives have been respected : covershadow Doucoure and force ball carrier to play long balls.
Crystal Palace didn’t expect such participation from Arsenal’s double pivot in pressing structure. It completely annihilated their vertical build-up. Gabriel Jesus positioning in pressing phase has been excellent.
