Took the Nairobi Expressway this morn, saw the traffic on MSA road, and I’m SO heartbroken πŸ’”
We should all be ASHAMED of regulations that entrench discrimination, inequality & classism.
All Kenyans, including those in Matatus & PSVs deserve equal access.
#AllOfUsOrNoneOfUs 🧡
If the premise of the Expressway is to save time, EVERY Kenyan who is willing to pay, deserves access
Are car owners more equal than others?
Is their money special?
Is their time more valuable?
Do they (and their kids) deserve to get home in 20 min while others take 3 hours?
First, WE KNOW the Expressway accidents are mainly a safety and design problem.
We know because we've seen BOTH private and public vehicles crashing into the toll stations.
We know because of the congestion and inconvenience that the toll points are causing on Mombasa Road.
And WE KNOW it’s a design flaw because it's not the first time #KeNHAKenya has dropped the ball on quality and safety.
Outering, Thika Road, Ngong road, Mombasa road...
The Expressway is NOT an exception to #TransportKE mediocrity rule.
We even rank globally on this.
Accidents won't to stop until we fix the right problem.
Proper signage.
Adequate room for vehicles to slow down, and divert onto the Expressway.
And public education for drivers; many who have never used a toll road before.
What does 97 Billion get us if not a world class road?
We may not like matatus.
Heck, even matatus hate matatus.
BUT, it's the only option for millions of Kenyans.
Recklessness is not just a PSV issue.
Haven't we seen private cars speeding on the expressway?
We have traffic rules.
Enforce them! On ALL offenders. On ALL roads.
We keep hearing β€œThe Expressway is a Public Private Partnership so tolls, not taxpayers are paying for it”
That’s NOT how #PPP works 😫
PPPs like Toll roads which RARELY meet revenue targets, often require GOVT guarantees.
Meaning taxpayers WILL PAY if liabilities materialize.
Yes, #PPPs can be useful to finance development off Govt balance sheets.
But they ONLY deliver value for money when there's transparency, accountability, proper project selection and preparation.
Not when they are used to exacerbate inequality, or advance self-serving ends.
The Expressway was a poor value for money choice, shrouded in mystery and zero #PublicParticipation.
For 97B we deserved a mass transit solution for all Kenyans.
Instead, taxpayers are stuck with a 9B repair bill for MSA road.
And presumably, on the hook for liabilities!
Either way, Kenyans are NOT privy to these transactions because the Govt is YET to disclose them.
Kenyans have a CONSTITUTIONAL right (Article 35(1), 35(3) PPP Act, ATI Act, Public Audit Act, PFM Act) to information that impacts them.

As Kenya struggles with #debt sustainability, it's important for citizens to know the true nature of the public debt & fiscal risks that they, and future generations are dealing with.
We MUST be able to trust that elected officials are making responsible decisions for ALL OF US.
Our default as a country cannot be to ALWAYS mistreat low-income earners πŸ’”.
The Expressway is on public land.
The Expressway inconvenienced Kenyans during construction, damaged MSA road, and left gutters leaking on cars below.
And left taxpayers with a 9 Billion repair bill.
STILL. Kenyans scrape their coins together (IN THIS ECONOMY), to pay for a private road which has done NOTHING to solve traffic congestion as promised.
Only for us to tell them they are not allowed to use it.
What level of moral & ethical bankruptcy is this we are unlocking?😩
We MUST build a country founded on empathy, and kindness for each other.
The ONLY just and equitable directive is one that works for EVERYONE.
Whether they have a car or not.
If the Expressway needs fixing, close it for ALL Kenyans until it is ready.
#AllOfUsOrNoneOfUs
This Expressway reminds me of school kids who had β€œdoctor letters” for β€˜Hot water’, 'Saltless' (then they add salt) and β€˜No Cross Countryβ€™πŸ˜‚
While the rest shower with ice, and eat githeri with weevils.
Hakuna #SpecialDiet hapa!
Cold showers, and cross country FOR EVERYONE.
I keep hearing this sideways argument that 'Matatus are reckless' πŸ₯΄.
SO, are Matatus allowed to be reckless on other roads where they are not banned?
Don't we have a Traffic Police unit charged with ENFORCING traffic Laws and Regulations?
Are they unable to do their job?
You cannot privilege your way out of flawed road design!
There's a reason people are complaining about the traffic and congestion at the Toll entries and exits.
And the solution is not banning PSVs πŸ™„
The other absolutely self-defeating thing about the Expressway, is that it completely ruined Nairobi's possibilities for Mass Rapid Transit 😩.
How can we EVER hope for a sustainable mass transit solution when we have a 97 Billion Toll road that needs cars on it to survive?
