SUFISM ON THE SCALES OF MUHAMMAD BN ABDULWAHHAB
Thread
Given that prior to his invasion, a vast majority of Makkah & Madina; the innocent Muslims who lost their lives as a consequence of his desire for leadership were Sufis, you find that the most intolerant of people towards Tasawwuf, till this day are his followers.
In their desperate attempt to defend his actions, they persist on making Takfir on Sufis, believing that that gave him legal right to take their lives.
They insist that Sufism in general is deviance even when basic logic teaches defining people by their actions, & not by a name.
In this thread, I will site a few pro-Sufi statements from MiAW, in sha Allah.
Perhaps by this, Salafis & I-am-Just-an-Ordinary-Muslim-Salafis, who have been afflicted by Sufi-phobia may know that, even their grand Shaykh affirms Sufism.
BismiLlah
In Fatāwā wa Masā'il, compiled by Salih bn ³AbdurRahmān, Muhammad bn Abdulwahab (MiAW) says there are two sets of people who incline towards Islam; the Jurists who are knowledgeable and the SUFIS who are worshippers, and he said: "ALLAH SENT HIS PROPHET WITH BOTH".
In his book, Arba³ul Qawā³id tadūrul Ahkām ³Alayha, MiAW did what his over-enthusiastic defenders & apologists failed to do; affirm the field of Tasawwuf (also known as Ilmul Ahwāl, Dhawq, Suluk, Tazkiya etc.) as an individual field in Islamic Study.
Whenever they made unguarded comments on Tasawwuf for lack of its understanding and are reminded that Tasawwuf is an individual field of knowledge that should be studied, they often deny it. But you can see MiAW affirming it as above.
Ibn Taimiyyah (r) also did same.
To be clear, Sufism is a field of knowledge that should be studied individually before being commented on.
In Mu'allafatush-Shaykh, MiAW said "the great Shuyukh of Tasawwuf who are Gnostics often enjoin people to follow knowledge".
Hmm. This isn't how to quote a kafir imo.
Elsewhere, while praising the Sahaba, Ibn Abdulwahab compared them to a Knowledgeable Sufi. Notice how he uses rhetorics to drive home the fact that Sufis are of excellent conduct while Fuqahā are excellent in knowledge, further asserting that combining both is the goal of Islam.
MiAW obviously didn't express the level of acrobatic phobia and hatred towards Sufism as his today supporters do.
Earlier on, it was established that Ibn Taimiyyah was a Sufi who leaned towards the path of Shaykh AbdulQadir Jaylaani (r).
And now we find MiAW affirming Sufism.
I suggest it's time to #EndSufiphobia.
Sheikh Abd al Hafīdh bn Mālik said that he read all the books of MiAW from page to page but never found a place where MiAW directly attacked the people & scholars of Tasawwuf or Sufism by mere fact that they were Sufis.
What is in fact provable is that MiAW didn't consider Sufis as deviants nor did he think Sufis are lost JUST because they are Sufis. Rather, he regarded Sufism as a field of knowledge that teaches Akhlāq, Ahwāl, Dhawq, Suluk, etc. & called out the things he didn't understand.
His son, Abdullah bn MiAW said:"we are not against any Sufi Tarīqa as long as its activities are conversant with the Shari'ah".
AlhamduliLlah. As a Tijāni Sufi, I dare to say that indeed anything that is legislated in the Tijāni Tarīqa has a sound backing in Shari'ah.
So next time you see "Sufism", understand that it is an individual field of Islamic sciences. Do not fret. Resist the inherent Takfiring urge you're so accustomed to and respectfully ask for Shari'ah backing for their actions.
