5 things to note before visiting Obudu
While Obudu mountain resort is perhaps the most popular tourist attraction in Nigeria, over the years it has been plagued by both poor maintenance, bad reviews and the burden of living up-to the standard of it’s years of good reputation.
Having visited Obudu 4 times in the last 2 years, i believe it is still worth visiting as it remains one of my preferred tourist destinations in Nigeria. However most of the problems/bad reviews you may have heard are true, but there are ways around them. Let’s get into it.
1. Prepare for a road trip: the best route to Obudu is through Enugu - Ebonyi - Ogoja. This road takes about 5hrs, it’s way better & has a heavy security presence. Most of them are civil & do not harass travelers. If you go through Calabar be ready for a long bumpy 7-hrs drive.
2. Have a car on standby: while you can hop on public transportation to get to Obudu (it’s cheaper), I’d recommend you drive or rent a car and keep it on standby at Obudu throughout your trip. Why this? Well check the next point.
3. Obudu is a village/community: don’t make the mistake of thinking Obudu is like your normal resort. This is a tourist destination located in a community on the Sankwala mountains. It is vast and expansive and have locals residing in some parts. The resort is just a section.
For instance walking from the cabins to the kitchen or reception is a 15-20 minutes walk. When it’s time for your tours, somewhere like the grotto waterfall is some 45 minutes to 1 hour walk. Don’t play yourself you’d need a car for ease of movement.
4. Prepare for poor power supply: the electricity at Obudu is off-grid. They run the Generator for 6 hours daily 6pm to 12am (in theory), but in practice it’s about 3-4 hours. You’d need to make arrangements for a smaller Generator if you want to have more frequent power.
5. Poor network: the only network provider that works at Obudu Mountain Resort is MTN & this does not even cover the whole range of the resort. If you go with any other network provider asides MTN, expect ZERO reception wether for calls, internet or whatever. I’m not exaggerating
There are a few other things to consider such as Tour guides, food, water, how to access essentials, etc. However this is already a long thread. I’d leave you with one advise, if you’re visiting Obudu, please consult a travel agency that Organizes frequent trips to Obudu.
Obudu is totally worth visiting, the views are mad, the weather is unbelievably cold for a hot country like Nigeria. You will never regret visiting Obudu.
In the past 2 years we @happyorange_ng have taken at least 80 people to Obudu & we have learnt a lot in the process. Our last trip was earlier this month and our next trip is 15th to 18th of Sept 2022. We can also plan private trips for you to make it seamless and enjoyable.

“Make arrangements for a smaller generator” doesn’t necessarily mean you’re bringing one, you can make arrangements to rent from someone in the community. It can be provided for an extra cost upon request. I don’t know if this explanation sheds more light?
Let’s not get it twisted, even in its current state, no tourist attraction in Nigeria comes close to Obudu Mountain Resort. You may have your reservations, but you’d never regret visiting Obudu, ever. And you’d never have an experience to compare to it (at least not in Nigeria).
