If you're interested in working in Crypto or Web 3, read this:
Why Work in Web 3?
β€’ They pay well. Crypto companies are flush with venture capitalist funds & are on a hiring spree.
β€’ Flexibility. Many of them let you work from home.
β€’ It's the Future. You get a front-row seat to a skyrocketing industry. πŸš€
Now is the Best Time to Enter.
Web 3 is here to stay.
Some people view Web 3 as risky - they rather stick to their comfy Web 2 jobs.
Give it a few years and it'll be a competitive bloodbath for web 3 jobs.
Now's the "sweet spot."
Let's look at some Web 3 career paths:
/1 The Writer ✍️
Everyone from media companies to protocols wants to hire writers.
There are 4 types:
a. Content Writing
They write long-form content such as blog posts and emails.
The goal is to educate people about the company and to keep them engaged.
Web 2 companies get attention through paid ads using Google/Facebook.
There are restrictions stopping Crypto companies from advertising - Protocols are turning to writers as a way to get eyeballs.
b. Journalists
Reporting Crypto news for media companies.
c. Technical Writing
You’re able to understand the technical details of the protocols.
You'd make the gigabrain concepts easy to understand for people.
You'll write the Gitbooks, white papers, and announcements.
d. Copywriting
Copywriting is all about being persuasive - it's being able to sell using words.
Protocols are starting to smarten up. It's not enough to explain your protocol.
You have to persuade people to sign up and use it.
That's where Copywriters come in.
/2 The Researcher πŸ“š
Most of you are already spending all day on Twitter and Discord looking for Alpha.
Might as well get paid for it.
Companies are dying to hire researchers.
I've been speaking to some and they're saying it's the hardest role to fill.
The Types of Researchers
β€’ Doing research for paid products or newsletters
β€’ Researching deals for Venture Capital firms & others
β€’ Data. Analyzing data and presenting them in an easy-to-understand way.
This is a great path for people who aren't developers or engineers.
What if You're Still New to Crypto?
I got you fam.
Did you know there are several internship positions?
You can come in with ZERO experience.
They will mentor you AND you get paid.
/3 The Marketer
Another one HIGH in demand.
It's a land grab now in Crypto and companies are fighting for Attention.
β€’ Strategy. Setting the vision and branding.
β€’ Specialized in growth channels like SEO or Twitter
β€’ Social media managers
β€’ Sales focused
/4 Design 🎨
We know Crypto isn't friendly enough for the mainstream yet.
This is where designers come in.
β€’ Branding: makes everything more attractive
β€’ UX / UI designers: focus on improving ease of use and onboarding.
β€’ Product Design & Product Management
/5 Community Manager πŸ‘₯
Build communities on Discord, Reddit, Twitter, Facebook, etc.
You're representing the protocol.
You're also listening to the community for feedback.
There's a lot of crossover between this role and marketing.
/6 Developers & Engineers πŸ’»
Great developers are the Rockstars of the industry.
The compensations are climbing up to Silicon Valley levels.
The difference?
It's far easier to get a job as a developer in Web 3 compared to breaking into a FAANG company.
/7 The "Normal" Jobs
β€’ Executive assistants
β€’ Product Managers
β€’ Project Managers
β€’ Risk Analysts
β€’ Accountants
β€’ Sales
β€’ HR
Not everything has to be a Crypto related position.
You can transition from your existing role to a Web 3 one.
/8 Companies Are Creating New Roles
Companies are creating roles that didn't exist a year ago.
Think about it - how many people in this world would you say are Tokenomics experts?
High demand, low supply.
My #1 Advice for Finding a Job
Imagine if you wanted to hire a logo designer - wouldn't you want to see a portfolio of their work?
Web3 companies don't care as much about an IVY league degree.
They want to see experience & proof of work
Do You Want Writing or Research Jobs?
β€’ Start writing more on Twitter.
β€’ Start a medium or a substack account.
This is going to serve as your portfolio and a magnet for opportunities.
You're creating leverage and career deal flow.
I started this account in Jan.
Companies started offering me 6-figure positions after a few weeks.
I didn't seek these jobs - they came to me.
A big reason is I built a large enough audience to be discovered.
Here's an important concept that many don't understand...
Companies can't find you if you only have 600 Twitter followers.
It's kinda like having the potential to be a movie star, but you live in a tiny town.
Learn how to build an audience on Twitter.
It'll increase your chances of luck.
Getting Experience Without Experience.
Ah, the old πŸ” & πŸ₯š.
Some of these companies are looking for people with experience.
What should you do?
Daos and protocols are always looking for volunteers.
You can work there for free to gain some experience.
Want to be a Social Media Manager?
β€’ Volunteer to run a Twitter account.
Want to become a Community Manager?
β€’ Volunteer to moderate a Discord.
You'll have an advantage over everyone else applying.
"But ser, I don't want to work for free"
It's not forever.
Think of it as an investment into your future, and part of your "tuition" to break in.
You get the experience you'll need. Then use it as a stepping stone.
Who knows - the Daos might pay you after a while.
Experience Matters Less Than You Think
"2+ years experience" is a preference.
β€’ Person A: 6 months experience. Rockstar.
β€’ Person B: 5 years experience. Idiot.
Smart companies will go with A.
DON'T let requirements such as experience or 4-year degrees hold you back.
"Be so good they can't ignore you"
If you're not getting hired then analyze the situation.
Be honest with yourself:
β€’ Do you suck at interviewing?
β€’ Do you lack experience?
β€’ Are your skills up to par?
You can improve at these with time and effort.
Key Takeaways:
β€’ Web3 companies are hiring FAST. Now's your best chance of breaking in.
β€’ You don't need to be a developer. There are non-technical jobs such as writing, research, and community.
β€’ There's demand for traditional jobs too like assistants, HR, engineers.
By the way, I am launching a DeFi Job board next week!
I want to connect:
