The EVM has won. It has become the de facto smart contract platform, being adopted in multiple alt-L1s as well as Ethereum. Solidity has become the default smart contract language, with years of development and tooling being built on top of it.
It's relatively simple on the surface: why reinvent the wheel by creating a new VM or language, when you can just use what everyone is already familiar with?
After years of R&D by @the_matter_labs, @zksync 2.0 will be shipping an EVM-compatible ZK rollup. It's currently live on testnet!

Pretty much every contract currently existing on L1 can be deployed directly to zkSync 2.0, with no changes required and reap all of the benefits that ZK rollups provide. Developers don't have to learn a new language or make massive changes to their existing workflows.
On the user side, it will be near-identical to L1, but with exponentially lower fees and faster confirmations. Everybody wins.
