Ole Werner - Resurrecting Werder Bremen
[THREAD]
How has the new coach has transformed a lost side with an attacking system that secured 8 wins taking them to the top of the table, why is Marvin Ducksch fundamental to this successful run?

Since being relegated from the top tier last season after Kohfeld's unsuccessful stint, Bremen were struggling and Marcus Anfang who replaced him wasn't able to do much good either getting suspended and leaving Bremen in the middle of the Bundesliga2 table in 10th place.
Ole Werner the former coach of Holstein Kiel who was appointed in November created a sensation in the Hansestadt bagging eight wins taking Bremen to the top of the table and ironically losing out only to Kiel since he's taken over. He uses a 3-3-2-2 system focused on verticality.
The key features of this system are:
• A back-three with outside CBs able to push wide and high
• A single pivot
• Two advanced mids playing between the lines behind two forwards
• Wingbacks who are able to both defend inside and provide width outside

The wingbacks don't just offer width and stay wide waiting for a switch of play. Rather, they need to also be able to stay tight in defensive transitions to defend the channels inside. The principle is to counter-press high up so that the ball can be won in the opp. half
The two midfielders and two forwards constantly create depth and superiority between the lines engaging the defenders which helps to create space for the wingbacks as the free-man to attack wide channels like in this instance where Bremen score against Ingolstadt.
A crucial component of this system is Marvin Ducksch who functions both as a playmaker and a forward who can create and get goals. A look at his heatmap shows his multi-faceted role in this system. Ducksch has scored 8 goals with 6 assists since Werner.

Ducksch provides a lot of threat in the final third due to his ability to drop lower to receive the ball between the lines and connect with the surrounding teammates with short passes while the wingbacks create wide threats. A diamond at the back offers defensive stability.
The presence of two strikers allows one of them to play as a target man, while the other - Ducksch in particular - is able to drop between the lines to provide positional superiority behind the second line of the opponent's press
As the ball is switched to the other side from the back, Ducksch is either able to link plays between the lines with short 1-2 passes and quickly threaten the space in behind for other players, or play the ball out wide and continue the attack forward through the wingbacks
The presence of another striker partner and two advanced midfielders between the lines also allows Ducksch the positional freedom to drift wide to create amplitude in case the wingbacks needed to push inside for defensive support in the previous play
Any of the four advanced players can attack the space in behind with vertical runs. This permits Bremen to play vertically without compromising on defensive cover because the players behind are still able to counter-press with superiority
Ole Werner gained attention after eliminiating Bayern Munich from the DFB-Pokal last year. This Bremen project shows a lot of promise. He is even reported to take inspiration off Julian Nagelsmann's game model at Bayern implementing video references in coaching sessions.
