20 second TikToks and 10 second ads have destroyed your focus.
Use these 8 steps to get into deep work and change your life:
--Thread--
1. Time block
Schedule deep work sessions for 1.5 to 2 hours.
Why?
It takes 20-30 minutes to get into flow state and around 1.5-2 hours before your focus declines.
Take a break too early, you won’t get into flow state; Take no breaks, you won’t work efficiently.
2. Use themed days
Separate work based on categories.
Analytical work engages one part of your brain.
• Planning
• Research
• Organization
Creative work engages a different part.
• Writing
• Designing
• Idea generation
Separating the 2 gets you into flow 10x easier.
3. Remove distractions
• Put your phone out of sight
• Use noise-canceling headphones
• Use website blocking apps like Freedom, Flora, or SelfControl
It’s impossible to become distracted when it’s not an option.
4. Listen to instrumental music
Try these soundtracks:
• Drive
• TENET
• Dunkirk
• Ad astra
• Inception
• Interstellar
• Cyberpunk 2077
• Blade Runner 2049
• The Dark Knight Trilogy
Your brain will get into deep work 2x faster.
5. Use a timer
Knowing you have a time constraint will make you work harder.
It also prevents you from checking the time and interrupting your focus.
6. Focus on 1
Set 1 big goal for each work block.
Now, break that goal into 3 actionable tasks.
Complete one task, then move on to the next.
Knowing what you need to do prevents you from getting distracted with “busy” work.
7. Reflect
After your work sessions, ask yourself what went well and what you can improve.
Do you need to:
• Change the length of time?
• Do certain tasks before others?
• Work at a different part of the day?
8. Reward yourself
Do something fun after your session.
Watch Netflix, go on Twitter, or eat that cookie you’ve been fantasizing about.
This will make your brain associate positive feelings with the completion of work.
And that's all folksđź‘‹
