After 18 months of work, freeCodeCamp's new learning experience is now live.
We rebuilt the Responsive Web Design Cert with feedback from the community:
🛠️ More projects
💪 More repetition to help with retention
⌨️ Less reading and more coding
Try it now: freecodecamp.org
I'm going to properly announce this next week, but I wanted to give a heads-up to all you hard-core learners who are still here on Twitter right before the holiday.
This is in beta, and we would welcome feedback through GitHub issues. We plan to remake all our certs like this.
Rapid fire FAQ:
Will this affect my existing certs?
No. These are fully backward compatible. New versions of these certification courses will still require the same 5 certification projects.
We will never invalidate old certs. Your LinkedIn and résumé URLs can rest assured 👍
Should I stop coding and wait for the new certs?
No way – there's no reason to. If you want, you can just switch over as these new versions come out. Or not. Like I said, they involve the same 5 certification projects.
What are the new features?
1. Everything is taught within the context of a project. Everything. No more individual lessons.
2. Instead, you complete steps. Thousands of them.
3. Instead of failing test messages, you now get a single context-specific hint to help you get unstuck.
Is this harder or easier than the old version?
It's easier because it's much more focused, more rapid-fire. But it's harder because it's a lot more coding.
There is less hand-holding, but we do a better job of setting you up to succeed, and anticipating mistakes you might make.
Are these new practice projects required?
No. You can skip straight to the "boss fights" if you want. Each certification has 5 required certification projects. If you can build those and get their tests to pass, you earn the certification. As simple as that.
These new practice projects are just there to interactively teach you the tools and concepts – just in time. And to give you a ton of reps with the syntax.
Again, this is something I sketched out way back in 2018, and we started working on in earnest about 18 months ago. It took a LONG time to nail the UX. (And I'm sure there are still a lot of improvements to be made – thanks in advance for your feedback.)
The reason things are moving so much faster at freeCodeCamp now is simple: we have more resources. It's not just me coding in my closet anymore. We have 30 teachers on our team now (some are part time at freeCodecamp part time teaching at high school / univeristy).
How are we able to have 30 teachers on our team? Because of kind people like you.
We are still running super lean, but the donations we receive from 7,539 people each month make a massive difference. We now take chances like this one, or the Learn to Code RPG game.
I am bad about asking people to donate to freeCodeCamp. I know our nonprofit is creating tons of value for people around the world, but I'm terrible at capturing much of it.
Help me not suck so bad at this. Donate to freeCodeCamp.😅 It's tax deductible. freecodecamp.org
We have been working really hard this year, and most of us are going to spend some time with our families over the holidays. I am too for a few days, but I'll be back on Tuesday.
Next week we'll announce our 2021 Top Contributors. I'm really excited about this.
Anyway, this is probably most most rambly tweet thread ever, so I'll let you get back to your day.
I'm just so excited. I can't help it.
If you are feeling charitable, donate to our nonprofit. And happy holidays to you and your family. freecodecamp.org
