Among the Bahai
1. At the inauguration of a Bahai college in Auckland, prayers were offered by representatives of Bahai, Hindu, Zoroastrian, Christian and Shamanic religions. No Islamic prayers were allowed because Bahai had faced violence, persecution in their Iranian homeland
2. Interestingly, the Shamanic prayer was offered by Aziz, a Muslim man from Uzbekistan. After the opening ceremony, I went up to Aziz and asked him about his beliefs and why he was representing Shamanism, which is practised in Central Asia and Siberia.
3. Aziz told me: "In Uzbekistan, people of all religions live in harmony. Yes, I'm a Muslim but have no need to outwardly project my faith. I do not fast on Ramzan, do not pray 5 times a day, or insist on halal."
Aziz is the polar opposite of subcontinental Harmfuls.
