Gilgit Sutras:
In 1931 around 3,000 folios of scripture copied on brick bark were found in Napura , Gilgit. These manuscripts are said to be around 1400 years old and are among the oldest Buddhist manuscripts. The manuscripts are known as Gilgit Lotus Sutras.

These manuscripts are written in #Sanskrit, with a lot of loaned words from ancient #Prakrit languages and the script used was Devanagari . Nobody has been able to fully decipher these manuscripts,yet we have learned a lot from these manuscripts .

It contains stories of Buddhist monks , Chronology of Buddhist kings of Gilgit, Ayurvedic medicine, folk tales and #Buddhist philosophy.
These manuscripts are the only corpus of Buddhist manuscripts discovered in the subcontinent. Such was the importance of these manuscripts
that Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1947 despatched a special Plane to Kashmir to get the Gilgit Manuscript. Currently 3/4th of these manuscripts are in #Dehli, India . 1/4th of these manuscripts can be found in various museums across Sub-continent ( e.g #Karachi , #Srinagar )
and #Britain .
The site might have been the residence of Buddhist monks. According to old #Rajatarangi texts Gilgit was known as #Daradadesa ( Country of Dards ) . While Mahabharata calls the people living in the west of Kashmir as Dardas and describe them as brutal and
fearless warriors.
Gilgit under its Hindu kings was known as #Sargin and later it became famous as #Gileet.
