Tactical analysis proposition : AC Milan 🔴⚫️ - Inter ⚫️🔵
Knowing high positioning from Calabria, Tonali had to take his place and manmark Calhanoglu to prevent Inter to reach that zone
Brahim Diaz made some wrong choices in the last pass, despite interesting and various moves from forwards
As I said, Tonali frequently slide into a fullback position to compensate for high position from Calabria.
Inter, as we know, when opponents build up is axial, forms a 3-2 shape to first trap Kessie and second accompany the first line of pressure.
when Kessie drops off to slide into 3rd central defender, Tonali replaced him but the issue was the same, strong off-the-ball animation from Inter.
Kessie had some troubles to defend in his own third. Here, the double pivot was not coordinated and Tonali didn’t watch on Barella. Kessie jumped on Hakan, but the turkish didn’t see Barella’s vertical run.
Skriniar has a relevant participation in build up. But if there is no passing options, he tends to come back in his own half. Milan understood it well and we could have seen this type of pressing to cut all passing options to force Skriniar to play with Tatarutsanu.
On the contrary of Inter, milan has not a predefined off ball structure. It means you have to adapt to players’ moves. And Krunic let too much distance many times with Brozovic, who could drop off easily.
You can also see Dzeko acting as a midfielder to propose a passing option.
As Milan’s double pivot remains relatively high, and Krunic letting Brozovic away, Inter can switch game zone (in case of low build up) easily, by using width.
As I said, Milan has not a noticeable pressing structure. They impose a strong and high line of pressure, but thanks to intelligent moves from pistons (here Perisic) are enough to overthrow that line (Calabria’s high positioning too)
Kessie took too much time to organize build up and Inter players felt it. Hakan has started to jump on him, Dzeko and Barella keeping short distance with the 2 passing options left for Kessie.
Then, he is trapped forced to come back in his penalty box and commit a foul.
When the ball locates on lanes, Inter abandoned its 3-2 shape and one the two pistons participated to off ball animation, transforming into a 3-3 shape.
Against Roma, Milan had many possibilities in half spaces. But Inter structure was too organized to let players navigate in it.
I have to point out the excellent 1st half from Darmian, especially in defensive organization: always scan opponent before looking at the ball.
Milan frequently tried to overthrow Inter through the left lane, but Barella and Darmian manmarked well Tonali-Ballo or Ballo-Leao
Against Roma, we have seen Mancini harassing Zlatan when he decided to drop off. Bastoni endorsed the same role, and with the same result : Zlatan forced to play back.
When Milan wanted to take numerical superiority on lanes, we have regularly seen this absence of triangle to help Ballo creating spaces and overloads. Kessie and Leao overwhelmed the axial zone.
Double pivot dictates block positioning concerning Milan. Here, the structure is great, but the only move Krunic should have done is to press Brozovic.
He was covered by his double pivot, and Brozovic wouldn’t have chosen to pass the ball to Barella, dangerously positioned.
Double pivot dictating block positioning Episode 2
Here, double pivot decided to press high, but in one single pass from Handanovic, the whole structure tears apart, and thanks to Edin-Lautaro association, Inter had a penalty.
Milan had two solutions to overthrow Inter’s off the ball animation:
- Stretch that 3-2 animation with fullbacks (1st photo)
- Take advantage of rare piston’s non participation in the 3-3 structure on lanes (2nd photo, blue dotted lines = position players should have take)
As lanes are bottled, Leao had an interesting to use Ballo’s position to curve his run and adress and marvelous ball to Diaz, but Krunic made a questionable move and blocked the pass. Inter’s defense was dislocated (thanks to Zlatan)
Inter’s vertical transitions have also been numerous, their fundamental quality under Inzaghi.
In second half, Lautaro or Dzeko navigated frequently in half spaces to bring biding options. These kind of players are nightmares for CB and MF to mark.
AC Milan’s first line of pressure has also been destroyed by Dzeko’s deep drop offs. Bastoni participated to these passing schemes and Calabria manmarked with laxism his teammate in National team. Numerical superiority has been created subsequently.
Saelemaekers entrance has been helpful for Milan because we know his ability to navigate in a central position (same way Insigne does) to bring solutions in half spaces (2nd photo) and force one of Inter’s defenders to jump on him (and also creating spaces)
