The Ashtavinayak yatra covers the eight ancient holy mandirs of Ganesh around Pune.
Each has its own individual history and the form of each murti of Ganesh and His trunk are distinct from one another.
Please read below:-
Sri Mayureshwar, Morgaon, Baramati
Starting and ending point of yatra. Also, the foremost center of worship for members of Ganaptya sect due to association with Morya Gosavi.
This was the place where Sindhu was killed by Ganesha and Ganesha rode a peacock (Mayureshwar).
Vighneswar, Ozar (Pune)
popular for Golden dome (Sonayacha Kalash) and Deepmala (a stone pillar). Among Ashtavinayakas, this is the only mandir with a golden dome and pinnacle.
Here Ganesha defeated Vignasura, the demon of obstacles.
Chintamani, Theur
A demon Ganasur took away the jewel "Chintamani" from Kapila muni. Ganesha recovered the jewel and returned it to Kapila but Kapila requested him to stay here forever. Theur is a Sanskrit word meaning Stable and named so since Ganesha has stabilised here.
Girijatmaj Ganapati, Lenyadri (Pune)
Ganesh Puran says that Parvati did severe penance on the Lenyadri mountain. She wiped her body and used the dirt to create a murti.
Gajanan entered this murti and stood before her as a young boy with six arms and three eyes.
Varadvinayak, Mahad, Raigad
Swayambhu murti in the form of Varada Vinayaka, the giver of bounty and success. Ganesha faces east (Purvabhimukh) and is enshrined in sitting posture with his trunk towards the left. The stone murtis of Riddhi and Siddhi are seen in the sanctum.
Ballaleshwar Ganpati, Pali
Only Ganesha who is known by his bhakta’s name. As sun rises, sun rays fall directly on Ganesha murti during worship. The mandir contains a bell that was brought back by Chimaji Appa (Peshwas) after his defeat of the Portuguese in Vasai and Sasti.
Mahaganapati, Ranjangaon
Ganesha is also named as Mahotkat. It is after invoking this form of Ganapati that Shiva vanquished the demon Tripurasur and so he is also known as Tripurarivade Mahaganpati.
Ganesha is seated on a lotus, flanked by his consorts Siddhi and Riddhi.
Siddhatek Ganapati, Ahmadnagar
The place is called Siddhatek because Sri Vishnu did penance here to please Ganesha. He installed right- trunked Vinayaka made of Gandaki rock.
Shiva had guided Sri Vishnu to please Ganesha in order to kill two demons-Madhu and Kaitabha.
