Will we have any real accountability for what happened at Wembley on Sunday? We were incredibly lucky the worst didn’t occur, the recipe for it was there. Still haven’t been able to shake the disconcerting feeling, married with anger at the response we’ve received thus far.
Still seeing “small group” broke in. Police saying they “did not lose control at any point” and “how fans were managed inside the venue is for Wembley, policing for outside.” Well, where did they get inside from?
FA say ‘we’ve got a fantastic security team at Wembley and they'd never seen anything like it.’ But warnings at the semi, when loads bunked in. Sunday’s conditions - enormity of the game, late KO, 6am pub queues - and the state of play by early afternoon spelt big issues to come
FA: ‘Security exceeded the requirements for the final.’ In terms of what? Overwhelming reports of no bag checks, body checks, Covid-test checks. The videos of what happened and flood of matching eye-witness testimonies speak for themselves.
The behaviour from the fans that caused the mayhem was reprehensible and they should be dealt with, but those tasked with securing the event and keeping people safe have to take responsibility for the complete shambles that, I must repeat, could have led to disaster. No, "not us"
Remember, up until 8:30pm, the official line was there was no breach of security at Wembley and no ticketless fans inside contrary to the evidence of our eyes.
Never forget that.
We’re told a 'full review' will take place, but we’re already seeing the sidestepping of blame.
