Did you know the first virtual UN climate sessions #SB2021 starts this week after a gap of 18 months because of the pandemic? Why does this meeting matter & whatโ€™s at stake for COP26? Read on ๐Ÿ‘‡
1/X
This #SB2021 takes place during a time of compounding global calamities with the #climatecrisis adding to the already devastating impacts of the pandemic, with those that are marginalised & vulnerable in our society bearing the brunt of loss of life, homes, livelihoods & jobs 2/X
As the first formal virtual session of its kind, bringing together over 190 nations, #SB2021 must ensure cooperation, equitable access & transparency. We urge all parties to make progress in this meeting and use this virtual set-up to accelerate #climateaction.
3/X
If #COP26 is to happen in person in a safe & inclusive manner, rich countries must ensure rapid & equitable access to vaccines globally. We cannot accept an โ€˜elite COPโ€™ with a few vaccinated delegates while millions of frontline workers wait to be vaccinated. #PeoplesVaccine 4/X
We are now at a turning point in fighting the #climatecrisis. Rich countries must lead by ending all funding to fossil fuels, increase their NDCs, deliver the $100b, and radically boost new finance, especially for #adaptation & #LossAndDamage. #SB2021 5/X
#LossAndDamage has not been included in the official agenda of this round of #climate talks but it is a key issue for vulnerable countries to help communities facing #ClimateCrisis. #SB2021 6/X
#COP26 risks being a failure without concrete progress on ClimateFinance. We need to see new finance pledges this year and a clear plan on how finance will be scaled up in the next few years. #SB2021
7/X
At the #SB2021 delegates must make real progress on finalizing the #ParisAgreement rules, in particular, a #CommonTimeframes for NDCs, rules for carbon markets in #Article6 and the transparency framework.
8/X
In order to accelerate ambition, countries must align on a common 5-year time frame, that matches the 5-year ratchet mechanism of the #ParisAgreement. At this #SB2021, countries need to narrow down options on #CommonTimeFrames๐Ÿ•Ÿ
9/X
Agreeing on #Article6 guidelines is desirable only if its rules:
โœ…avoid all forms of double counting of internationally transferred mitigation outcomes
โœ…adopt safeguards, protection of human rights & rights of Indigenous Peoples
โœ…phase out Kyoto Protocol flexible mechanisms
All existing CDM projects and methodologies should be reassessed before any potential transition to the #Article6 mechanism(s) can be effective. #SB2021
11/X
No Kyoto emissions units should be used for compliance with non-Kyoto mitigation commitments. #SB2021
12/X
