A double edged sword attack method used by #China to discredit the Anti-Extradition Bill Movement in #HongKong
Findings of the research by @DFRLab about #Chinese #disinformation campaign:
There were two types of narratives that was run by the #CCP to discredit the movement. (1/4)
1. Positive Messaging: Promoting police and Chinese rule in #HongKong and the extradition bill
1.a. Police Stories
Posts showing the policemen being injured by the protestors were highlighted from accounts for local governments and government-owned news outlets. (2/4)
1.b. #HongKong Police vs the World: Comparing the actions of the police in HK with those in other democratic countries, to discredit the democratic system that the Hong Kong protesters demand.
2. Negative Messaging: To undermine the #HK protests & pro-democracy movement (3/4)
2.a. Protestors were showed as unstable & violent looters
2.b. Claims of Foreign Influence: Accused the protesters of colluding with foreign countries, like #UK, #US & #Canada that either condemned the CCP’s behavior or agreed to grant political asylum to the protesters (4/4)
