My position had been that Oman opened up too quickly. I was told that the economy would suffer if we didn’t open up. My view is that until you solve the health pandemic the economy will suffer. Oman is still in its first wave and now we are going back to lockdowns. 1/n
I’ll leave how to deal with the health issues to the health experts. Let’s talk about economic behavior here. This is what we need
1. Clear and consistent data. I said this when data reporting stopped, it gave people a false sense of security. Data allows us to follow trends
To take action before it’s too late. Reporting on deaths and ICU is a lagging indicator. Too late to do much when they number spikes
2. Clear awareness and information about what social distancing means. Clear definition of what family and household are.
3. Embrace work from home and distance learning. Businesses and organizations have different criteria rules for work, which is fine but rules within a company need to be clear
4. The economy will take a hit. Social safety net and small business funding is something that I have recommended. However, trying to get back to normal quickly will only hurt in the long run.
5. A stable and well run healthcare system is the priority. Too much pressure on it will lead to other economic and social concerns. Save the healthcare system.
In summary. Information, as much of it and as clear as possible. This will be tough, all of us are suffering. We have lost loved ones and our ability to live a “normal” life. The way forward is to minimize the paid till there is a vaccine.
Forgot to add an important point. Test, test, test. Test everyone we can and isolate the sick. And if you know you are sick, it’s your responsibility to isolate. Even if your case is “mild” you have no idea who you will pass it on to and how severe it will be for them.
