The Egyptian Navy is set to launch its final Gowind class corvette from the Alexandria Shipyard.
In 2014, Egypt signed a €1b Euro contract with France's Naval Group to buy four Gowind 2500 corvettes.
The Gowind (986) Luxor is the third corvette to be produced* under license in an Egyptian shipyard.
The first Egyptian Gowind corvette El Fateh (971) was launched at the Lorient naval shipyard in September 2016.
Luxor (986) joins the Port Said (976) [2018 launch] and El Moez (981) [2019 launch] from the Alexandria Shipyard.
* Egyptian production was limited to the cutting and welding of hull parts whilst major systems were assembled after French deliveries.
The navy spent an estimated €600m Euro on armament.
Egyptian Gowind class corvettes are outfitted with:
1 × OTO Melara 76 mm main gun
16 × VLS for MICA VL
8 × Exocet anti ship missile
2 × Nexter Narwhal 20 mm cannon
2 × triple MU-90 torpedo launcher
Egypt had considered an additional two Gowind class corvettes. However, negotiations with Naval Group failed after financing difficulties.
Egypt recently committed to the purchase of six German TKMS frigates in a €2.3+B Euro deal. potentially ruling out future Gowinds.
