To ease water shortage, in 1498 Rana Veer Singh started the construction of this stepwell in Adalaj, 18 km from Ahmedabad. A year later Mohammed Begda invaded the kingdom and the Rana was killed.

2. His beautiful Rani Roopba refused jauhar (suicide) and agreed to Begda's marriage proposal on one condition. he should complete building the well.
3. Begda, in his lust for the Rani, readily accepted the condition and completed the well. When the well was completed, Rani Roopba jumped in to the same well and killed herself. Such are the sacrifices that saved Hinduism and India.
